About CommonSpirit Health
CommonSpirit Health is a Catholic health care ministry headquartered in Chicago, IL. It carries on the charism and legacy of the CommonSpirit Health (Dignity Health & Catholic Health Initiatives), continuing a long history of religious women and men who founded hospitals to care for the sick, the poor, and the dying. A nationwide Catholic system formed from the union of Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health, serving communities across more than 20 states.
The Catholic health care mission
Like all Catholic health systems, CommonSpirit Health understands medicine as an extension of the healing ministry of Jesus. Care is guided by the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, by a deep respect for the dignity of every human life from conception to natural death, and by a commitment to serve everyone — especially those who are poor, vulnerable, or underserved.
Caring for the whole person
Catholic hospitals care for body, mind, and spirit together. Beyond excellent clinical care, that often means chaplaincy and pastoral care, hospital chapels and the sacraments, prayer and spiritual support for patients and families, and accompaniment in times of suffering, birth, and death.
